Dr. Christena Cleveland

Keynote Speaker

Join us to kick off the 2019 CEEP Conference with our Keynote Address by Dr. Christena Cleveland. She will discuss how, with pressing issues like immigration, the widening economic gap, and mass incarceration, those who desire to be agents of reconciliation in their communities can take up this Gospel work. Dr. Cleveland will explore what true reconciliation work entails – seeking to take us beyond noble-heartednes and towards pathways of true reconciliation.

Christena Cleveland is a social psychologist, public theologian, author, and Associate Professor of the Practice of Organizational Studies at Duke University’s Divinity School. Christena is author of Disunity in Christ: Uncovering the Hidden Forces that Keep Us Apart. Her recently completed second book is on its way to the publisher, with the working title Power Trip: How Facing Inequality Sets You Free. She’s also working on her third book which examines the relationship between gender, race, and cultural perceptions of God.

The Keynote Address is presented by ministry partner Saint Francis Ministries.

The Rev. Dr. Sam Wells

Presenting Speaker

Dr. Sam Wells closes the 2019 CEEP Conference with a look to the future and exploration of where innovative ministry is flourishing.

Sam has a baptized heart of honesty, compassion, and passion to match his baptized mind. He is a preacher, pastor, writer, broadcaster, and theologian and has served as a Church of England parish priest for 20 years. Sam also spent 7 years in North Carolina, where he was Dean of Duke University Chapel. Sam is Visiting Professor of Christian Ethics at King’s College London, and a member of the Multi-Stakeholder Council that advises the G20 meetings. He has published 30 books. His most recent book is Incarnational Mission: Being with the World. He has been Vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields in central London since 2012.

Worship in the Episcopal Church rests on scripture and the traditions of the elegant language of the Book of Common Prayer. While the worship might seem more formal than spontaneous, we reliably read scripture every time we worship together, and we follow the liturgy that has stood the test of time. Our worship is in letting the liturgy carry us along into a deeper spiritual awareness and connection with God.
